Key Rules and Responsibilities

Player Responsibility (Rule 6):

Players and caddies must know the rules.

Players must start on time, identify their ball, and ensure correct scoring in stroke play.
Undue delays or slow play are penalized.

Ball Played as It Lies (Rule 13):

Players cannot touch the sand in a bunker or loose impediments with their club before a stroke.

Ball at Rest Moved (Rule 18):

If a ball at rest is moved, it generally must be replaced unless moved by wind or water.

Penalties apply depending on who moved the ball.

Lifting, Dropping, and Placing (Rule 20):

Specific rules dictate when and how a ball may be lifted, dropped, or placed, with penalties for incorrect actions.

Assisting or Interfering Ball (Rule 22):

Players must manage situations where a ball might assist or interfere with play.

Free Drops:

Provided under specific rules for loose impediments, obstructions, and abnormal ground conditions.

Penalty Drops (Rules 26-28):

Detail relief options for balls in water hazards, out of bounds, lost balls, or unplayable lies.
Specific Situations

Must Correct Situations:

Include failing to hole out, playing from a wrong position, or using a wrong ball.

Permitted Actions:

Players can have the flagstick attended, ask for distances, and mark balls with the toe of a putter.

Prohibited Actions:

Players cannot identify a ball without marking it first, practice on competition days, or seek advice beyond allowable scope.
